Daily Minyan – June 15, 2009
On this date in 1938 – Johnny Vander Meer stuns baseball
by pitching his second successive no-hitter, defeating the
Dodgers 6-0, as Brooklyn plays the first night game ever at
Ebbets Field. In front of 38,748 fans, including spectator
Babe Ruth, Vander Meer strikes out seven and walks eight,
including three walks in the ninth.
Let’s see if any of our guys delivered a Hall of Fame performance.
Brad Ausmus, C - Los Angeles Dodgers
Since it was Sunday, Brad of course played! As
I have noted previously, if you want to see a
team’s backup catcher play, you have a great
shot of seeing him on a Sunday. And per
usual, Brad did quite well, he went 2-for-2, hit
his 2nd double of the year and drove in his 4th
run of the year in the Dodgers victory over the
Rangers. He also walked and was hit by a
pitch, thus, Brad reached based each time he
came to the plate!!! He must have been talking
to Youk or something!!!
He raised his average back over .300 to .317.
Additionally, he threw out his counterpart,
Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who
was trying to steal 2nd in the 8th inning.
Ryan Braun, OF, 3B - Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan went 1-for-4, with his lone hit being his
14th double of the year, in the Brewers loss to
the ChiSox. His average fell to .313.
Craig Breslow, P – Oakland A’s
Craig didn’t pitch in the A’s loss to the Giants on
Sunday.
Scott Feldman, P – Texas Rangers
Scott earned a well-deserved day of rest.
John Grabow, P, Pittsburgh Pirates
John earned his 11th hold of the year by
pitching a scoreless 8th inning in the Pirates
win over the Tigers on Sunday. He lowered his
ERA to 3.72.
Gabe Kapler, OF – Tampa Bay Rays
Gabe went 2-for-2, homered in his third straight
game and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay in
their win over the Nats. Gabe also walked twice
and was caught trying to steal 2nd in the 8th
inning. He raised his average above the
Mendoza Line once again!
Kapler is still batting only .202 (.268 against
lefties), but he has hit three home runs since
last Monday after hitting none in his first 34
games. His pinch-hit homer off Ron Villone on
Friday sparked a 4-3 victory, and his two-run
shot in the sixth off Ross Detwiler on Sunday
tied the game at 4.
He earned a Chai 5 for this continued hot
streak.
A .291 career hitter against lefties who hit .354
against them last year at Milwaukee, Kapler
acknowledged he’s heard the carping from fans
said he’s thankful Maddon trusted in him.
“Talk radio is an interesting medium,” he said.
“But I absolutely stunk for a really nice stretch
there.
The fact I kept getting the opportunity to
go back on the field, I’m not sure how many
managers would have kept throwing me out
there.
“At the same time, I never believe I can’t get the
job done. I always believe something great is
around the corner.”
“If he was 42, I might have had some doubts,”
Maddon said. “But he’s a young man, 33, who
keeps himself in great shape. (See the picture
below – especially my female fans)
Mrs. Kapler sure seems to like him as well!
He works his butt off, so it was a matter of time.
On top of that, his track record indicates that’s
what he is like.”
There has been at least one homer hit in all 33
games this season at Tropicana Field. The only
other park in the majors to have a homer streak
since from opening day is Yankee Stadium (32
games).
Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers
Ian went 0-for-4 in the Rangers loss to the
Dodgers on Sunday. His average continues to
sink and now is at .260.
Jason Marquis, P – Colorado Rockies
Jason earned a day of rest.
Scott Schoeneweis, P – Arizona Diamondbacks
Scott is currently dealing with the unexpected loss of his
wife. My prayers are with him.
Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B – Boston Red Sox
Youk went 0-for-4, and guess what, he
walked again!! He didn’t score or drive
anybody in. His average fell to .331.

Ryan Braun, OF, 3B - Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan went 1-for-4, and scored a run in the Brewers win over the Reds. He also struck out twice. His average decreased to .316.
Craig Breslow, P – Oakland A’s
Craig pitched 1/3 of a scoreless inning and earned his 4th hold of the year in the A’s win over the Rangers. He lowered his ERA to 5.03.

Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers
Ian went 1-for-5 and took part in 2 double plays. On the negative side, he committed his 4th error of the year and his average fell to .279.

Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B – Boston Red Sox
Youk went 2-for-4, drove in 2 runs, walked once and scored 3 runs in the BoSox victory over the Blue Jays. Both of his hits were solo homers. He hit his first one in the 1st off Toronto left-hander Ricky Romero, then hit the other one in the eighth off right-hander Brian Wolfe for the sixth multihomer game of his career. He raised his average to .366.

On this date in 1950, Hall of Fame slugger Hank Greenberg buys an interest
in the Cleveland Indians, becoming the team’s second-largest stockholder.
During his tenure, he assembled more African American players than any
other team executive in the Majors. Greenberg’s contributions in finding and
developing talent contributed to that team’s successes through the 1950s.
Greenberg remained as general manager and part-owner until 1957. He was
the mastermind behind a move to Minneapolis for the Indians, but that was
vetoed by the rest of ownership at the last minute. Greenberg was furious and
sold his share soon afterwards.

Brad Ausmus, C - Los Angeles Dodgers
Brad went 2-for-5 and scored 2 runs in the Dodgers victory over the Rockies. He raised his average to .355.
Brad also was the catcher for former University of Maryland pitcher Eric Milton who allowed one run in five innings for his first win in nearly three years. Milton had reconstructive surgery on his left elbow in June 2007 and missed all of 2008 before joining the Dodgers as a free agent in February
Brad said that Milton helped himself by getting ahead of hitters and spotting his curveball. “That was very effective for him today. He was getting some popups and quick outs,”
“Offensively, we’re continuing to live up to our billing,” Brad said. “When we lost Manny, a lot of the naysayers thought we would have trouble scoring runs but apparently, that isn’t true.”
Ryan Braun, OF, 3B - Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan went 0-for-1 in Tuesday’s game against the Cards, but left before the fifth inning after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch in the third by Adam Wainwright. X-rays were negative, but Ryan will be re-evaluated before Wednesday’s series finale.

Craig pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning in the A’s win over the Mariners and earned his 3rd hold of the year. His ERA fell to 5.71.

Grieving Schoeneweis visits Chase Field
PHOENIX (AP)–Grieving Arizona pitcher Scott Schoeneweis visited Chase Field on Wednesday for the first time since the death last week of his wife, Gabrielle.
Schoeneweis played catch and lifted weights before the Diamondbacks’ game against the San Diego Padres, manager A.J. Hinch said.
“It’s still obviously fresh off the horrible tragedy, but he got a little activity in today,” Hinch said. “I know he lifted and played a little catch. He stayed very clear of everything else.”
Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said the commissioner’s office granted the team permission to place Schoeneweis on the restricted list after his seven-day stint on the bereavement list expired. Byrnes said the club requested 30 days on the restricted list but added the length of Schoeneweis’ absence from the team was uncertain.
“We’ll just continue to talk to Scott and MLB about the realistic timeframe,” Byrnes said. “Return-to-work issues seem a little ridiculous at this point.”
Schoeneweis and his wife celebrated their 10th anniversary in January and had three children together. Gabrielle Schoeneweis also had a daughter before she married the reliever.
Authorities have not determined a cause of death for Gabrielle Schoeneweis, 39, who was found dead in the couple’s home in suburban Fountain Hills. Several Diamondbacks and team officials attended her funeral Monday.
Hinch said the Diamondbacks had no definite plan for the pitcher’s return to the active roster.
“Obviously, we’ll do anything for him to support him,” Hinch said. “Happy to see his face and have him come in to kind of his second home here in the clubhouse.”
Hinch said Schoeneweis planned to speak to the media after he is activated.

This Date in Baseball History (with an Orioles slant):
1957 – Dick Williams of the Orioles hit a ninth-inning, game-tying solo home run against Chicago’s Paul LaPalme seconds before 10:20 p.m. — a time set as a curfew so the White Sox could catch a train out of Baltimore. If Williams had done anything else, Chicago would have won. The game was replayed from the beginning and Baltimore won.
The White Sox obviously weren’t fans of this T-shirt slogan:
1990 – The Baltimore Orioles tied an American League record with eight consecutive singles in a seven-run first inning against Bobby Witt to beat the California Angels 13-1.

Brad went 1-for-5, scored a run and struck out twice in Sunday’s Dodgers’ win over the Marlins. Brad is now batting .346.
Brad was catching Clayton Kershaw, who had a no hit bid broken up in the 8th inning.
Ryan Braun, OF, 3B - Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan went 1-for-3, hitting his 8th double, earning a walk and scored 2 runs in Sunday’s Brewers win over the Cardinals. He also was hit by a pitch and scored when Prince Fielder blasted his 9th homer. His average held steady at .320.
Ryan earns a Chai 5 for his day.

Craig didn’t pitch Sunday in the Twins 3rd straight loss to the Yanks.
Scott Feldman, P – Texas Rangers
Scott pitched six scoreless innings in Sunday’s shutout of the Angels, allowing four hits and two walks along with getting three strikeouts. He left with the game tied 0-0 and Jason Jennings got the win. His effort lowered his ERA to 4.04.
The Rangers shut out the Angels in Texas for the first time since 2003 and had their first home shutout since last September.
John Grabow, P, Pittsburgh Pirates
John didn’t pitch Sunday in the Pirates win over the Rockies.
Gabe Kapler, OF – Tampa Bay Rays
Gabe went 0-for-2, knocked in a run, scored a run and drew a walk in the Rays victory over the Indians. His average fell to .220.
Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers
Ian went 1-for-3, scored a run and knocked in one. He also walked (but was immediately picked off) and slugged his 11th double of the year. His average rose to .314.

Jason was preparing for his Monday start against the Braves.
Scott Schoeneweis, P – Arizona Diamondbacks
Scott didn’t on Sunday because the D-backs game against the Braves was postponed to rain.

Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers
Ian went 2-for-4, including his 9th homer of the year, which once again was a leadoff shot. He drove in two and scored two in the Rangers win over the White Sox. He’s now batting .337.
Kinsler’s second leadoff homer in three games was the eighth of his career which tied the team record already shared by Michael Young, Mike Hargrove and Oddibe McDowell.
“Cool,” Kinsler responded when told of the record. “It’s a really good feeling to be leading 1-0 after one at-bat. It’s just something that kind of happens. It’s not like I’m going out there trying to hit a home run my first at bat.”

Jason, who pitched a complete game victory the day before celebrated his nice performance by chilling out on the bench!
Scott Schoeneweis, P – Arizona Diamondbacks
Scott didn’t pitch in the Diamondbacks loss to the Brewers.

Youk went 2-for-4, and slammed a 2-run homer (#6) in Boston’s loss to the Rays. Youk has hit four homers and has knocked in 15 RBIs in his last 14 games. He raised his MLB leading average to .407 average.

The New York Yankees slashed prices on more than 40 percent of their front-row seats by up to 50 percent Tuesday and announced many of those who bought tickets closest to the field for $325-$2,500 will be eligible for additional free seats.
Those initiatives could help pack previously unfilled areas that were an eye sore on television broadcasts during the opening homestand at the $1.5 billion ballpark.
“There are a few hundred suite seats in our premium locations that have not been sold on a full season basis,” Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement. “As a result, and for many of our fans who have already purchased full season suite seats in such premium locations, the Yankees are announcing today a program that adjusts certain prices and benefits.”
While most of the cheaper tickets in the second and third decks were sold for the opening six games, entire sections of cushioned blue seats with teak arm rests in the first nine rows in 25 sections went empty, areas that cost $500 and up. In addition, many of the non-premium seats between the bases, which cost $325 as part of season tickets and $375 individually, also went unfilled.
Assemblyman Richard Brodsky of Westchester, a frequent and vocal critic of the Yankees, said the reductions weren’t enough.
“It’s the public that built Yankee Stadium, and even at these prices, the public has been excluded from the very stadium they built,” Brodsky said. “It’s a continuing disaster.”

Ryan went 0-for-4, with three strikeouts in the Brewers victory over the Pirates. He lowered his average to .333 and extended his streak to 169 errorless games.
Craig Breslow, P – Minnesota Twins
Craig pitched a scoreless inning in the Twins victory over the Rays, however it wasn’t easy! After a lead-off walk to Carlos Pena, and a strike out of Pat Burrell, he gave up a 1-out double to Ben Zobrist to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. But he dug in and got the last two batters to pop up. He lowered his ERA to 4.26.

Scott’s next start is Thursday against Oakland.
