Daily Minyan - June 3, 2009
On this date in 1971, Cubs southpaw Ken
Holtzman tosses the second no-hitter of his
career, victimizing the Reds 1-0. Holtzman
scores the only run, in the third inning. He
became the only pitcher since the 1880s to
throw 2 no-hitters for the Cubs, and was also
one of the principal pitchers on Oakland's
championship teams from 1972 to 1975. His
174 career victories are the most in the major
leagues by a Jewish pitcher (Sandy Koufax had
165), and he held the record for most pitching
appearances by a Jewish pitcher until 1998.

As a promising Jewish left-hander, he was
heralded as a new Sandy Koufax, whom he
faced on September 25, 1966, one day after
Yom Kippur, with Holtzman winning 2-1 and
taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning; Koufax
made his last regular-season appearance a
week later on October 2.

Let's hope that some of our guys can live up to their level of excellence!!! Oy Vey!!
Brad Ausmus, C - Los Angeles Dodgers
Brad started and went 0-for-3 in yesterday's Dodgers win over the D-Backs. That dropped his average to .314.
Ryan Braun, OF, 3B - Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan went 1-for-4, and walked once in the Brewers loss to the Marlins. His average dropped to .309.
Craig Breslow, P - Oakland A's
Craig pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning in the A's win over the White Sox. He lowered his ERA to 4.98.
Craig earned another Chai 5!
Scott Feldman, P - Texas Rangers
Scott is scheduled to pitch tonight against Andy Pettitte.
John Grabow, P, Pittsburgh Pirates
John pitched a scoreless 8th inning in the Pirates victory over the Mets and earned his 8th hold of the year. He also lowered his ERA to 4.30.
Gabe Kapler, OF - Tampa Bay Rays
Gabe didn't play in the Rays victory over the Royals. However, his average is still below the Mendoza Line.

Ian Kinsler, 2B - Texas Rangers
Ian went 1-for-5 and stole his 11th base of the year in the Rangers loss to the Yanks. His average fell to .277.
Jason Marquis, P - Colorado Rockies
Jason is scheduled to pitch tonight against the Astros.
Scott Schoeneweis, P - Arizona Diamondbacks
Scott is currently dealing with the unexpected loss of his wife. My prayers are with him.
Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B - Boston Red Sox
Youk went 0-for-3, and walked in the BoSox victory over the Tigers. However, he also was hit by a pitch with the based loaded to record his 32nd RBI of the year. His average fell to .358.
My question is, what's with my guys getting hit by pitches??? That's gotta hurt!!!
Macher (Big Shot) of the Day - John Grabow
